What is high care in aged care?

Care & support

As we age, our needs change. For some people, living independently with little support is possible for many years. For others, more regular help is required to stay safe, comfortable and healthy. That’s where understanding the difference between low care and high care becomes important.

What does high care mean in aged care?

High care in aged care refers to more intensive, daily support for older people with complex medical needs or reduced independence. This often includes 24/7 nursing staff, allied health services and assistance with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, meals and medication management.

High care is designed to ensure that older adults who can no longer manage safely on their own still enjoy dignity, security and quality of life in a supportive environment.

What is low care in aged care?

Low care provides lighter support for people who are mostly independent but may need some assistance with day-to-day living. This might include help with meals, medication reminders, cleaning or personal hygiene. Low care allows people to remain active and independent while having support available when needed.

How do you know which type of care is right?

Determining whether high care or low care is appropriate depends on an individual’s health, mobility and personal circumstances. A doctor or healthcare professional can assess needs and make recommendations. Families and loved ones should also be involved in the conversation, as care needs can change over time.
