Why lifestyle and leisure activities are an essential part of aged care

Lifestyle & community

Lifestyle and leisure activities help older people stay active, connected and confident. See what these programs look like in aged care and how LDK brings them to life.

Amberfield lifestyle: morning walk to the dog park

Living well is about more than care. Lifestyle and leisure activities help older people stay active, connected and confident. At LDK, activities are part of daily life and support your physical, cognitive and social wellbeing.

What are lifestyle and leisure activities in aged care?

These are structured or informal activities that support health, happiness and connection. Examples include group exercise, music sessions, arts and crafts, gardening, games, book clubs, technology help, cultural celebrations and day trips. Activities can be individual or social, quiet or lively, and are tailored to different interests and abilities.

Why lifestyle activities matter

  • Physical health: Gentle movement helps strength, balance and mobility.
  • Mood and mental health: Social connection reduces loneliness and supports positive mood.
  • Cognition: Activities such as puzzles, reading and learning new skills help keep the mind active.
  • Purpose and identity: Hobbies and roles build confidence and a sense of belonging.

What is diversional therapy?

Diversional therapy is a professional approach that uses recreation and meaningful activity to support wellbeing. Programs are designed around the person’s interests, culture, goals and abilities, and can include social, creative, physical and cognitive activities.

Examples of lifestyle and leisure activities

  • Social: Morning teas, interest clubs, movie afternoons, walking groups and community outings.
  • Movement: Balance classes, gentle strength, chair yoga, hydro sessions where available and guided stretching.
  • Creative: Art and craft, knitting circles, music making and choir.
  • Cognitive: Trivia, board games, bridge, book clubs, tech help and language practice.
  • Purposeful: Resident-led groups, volunteering and community projects.
  • Spiritual and reflective: Quiet spaces, reflection time and optional faith gatherings.

Lifestyle at LDK

At LDK, you live in your own private apartment and choose how you spend your day. Our team supports a full calendar of activities across our villages, and we encourage residents to start new groups based on their interests. Couples, friends and families are welcome to join special events.

More to do. More to enjoy.

There are over 100 monthly activities at each LDK village. Click on the days of the week below to see a sample of the weekly activities at Greenway Views.
