How to choose where to live in retirement

Planning & decision-making

Choosing where to live in retirement is a big decision. It is not just about downsizing. It is about finding a place that supports the life you want now, while giving you confidence about the future.

Some people want a low-maintenance home close to cafés and parks. Others prioritise community, safety, or access to care if needs change. The best choice is the one that fits your lifestyle, budget and support needs.

Start with your lifestyle

Think about what a great week looks like for you.

Do you want quiet and privacy, or more social connection? Do you like organised activities, or the freedom to do your own thing? Would you rather cook at home most nights, or have dining options available?

Write down your non-negotiables. This will make comparisons much easier.

Check day-to-day liveability

Liveability is about how easy life feels.

Look at the location and the immediate surrounds. Consider:

  • shops, medical services and public transport
  • cafés, walking paths, green space and local community hubs
  • how easy it is for visitors to park or arrive by public transport

If possible, visit at different times of day. You will get a better sense of the pace and atmosphere.

Look at what is included

It is easy to fall in love with a beautiful apartment. However, what is included can make a big difference to everyday life and long-term value.

Ask what facilities and services are available on site, such as:

  • dining options and social spaces
  • wellbeing facilities, classes or programs
  • maintenance and support services that reduce life admin

Also ask what costs are separate. Clarity now prevents surprises later.

Ask about support, care and what happens if needs change

Even if you are healthy today, it is smart to plan for how support might work in the future.

Ask questions like:

  • What support services can be delivered to my home if I need help later?
  • Can my care plan change over time?
  • If my needs increase, what options are available within the community?

At LDK, this is where our One Move Promise® matters. It means residents purchase an apartment once, and if care needs change, LDK helps facilitate a seamless move to a more suitable apartment within the village, so you do not need to relocate outside the community.

Understand the financial model

Cost is not just the purchase price. It is the full picture.

Ask for a clear breakdown of:

  • upfront costs and what they cover
  • ongoing fees and what is included
  • any deferred fees payable on exit

At LDK Seniors’ Living, the Village Membership Fee can be paid upfront or deferred until exit. It cannot be paid monthly. Your Membership Consultant should be able to explain the model in plain language and provide the paperwork to review.

Consider distance and connection to loved ones

For many people, being close to family is one of the best parts of retirement.

Think about:

  • how often you want visitors
  • whether you want to be near children, grandchildren or friends
  • how easy it is for people to drop by for a coffee, a meal, or a special occasion

Also consider how connected you want to feel locally. A welcoming community can make a big difference to your sense of belonging.

Visit in person and trust what you notice

A tour is not just a formality. It is how you sense whether a place feels right.

When you visit, notice:

  • how staff interact with residents
  • whether people seem relaxed and comfortable
  • how the spaces feel, including noise levels and lighting
  • whether you can picture yourself living there

Bring your questions. Take notes. Ask for follow-up information if anything is unclear.

Compare options with a simple checklist

If you are weighing up a few choices, it helps to compare them side by side.

Create a short checklist with headings like:

  • location and liveability
  • home type and inclusions
  • lifestyle and community
  • care and support options
  • costs and contract terms
  • ease for family visits

This keeps the decision grounded and helps reduce overwhelm.
