Aged care versus respite care

Care & support

Aged care offers ongoing support tailored to your needs. Respite care is short term support for times when a carer needs a break or after an illness. While LDK does not provide respite care, we are happy to guide you and link you with suitable services.

What is aged care?

Aged care helps older people live well with day to day support. It can be delivered at home or in a residential setting. Support can include personal care, nursing, medication support, meals, transport, and social activities. Funding is usually through Home Care Packages or the Commonwealth Home Support Program. From 1 November 2025, the new Support at Home program will replace HCP and Short Term Restorative Care. CHSP will transition later, no earlier than 1 July 2027. What is respite care?

Respite care is short term support that gives a carer time to rest, work, or attend appointments. It can be planned or urgent. Types include in home respite, centre based day respite, and residential respite for a short stay in an aged care home. Access to funded respite usually starts with an assessment through My Aged Care. For urgent situations, Carer Gateway can help you arrange emergency respite.

Does LDK offer respite care?

No. LDK does not offer respite care. Our model focuses on long term supported living in your own apartment, with care delivered in home. If you are exploring short term respite, the services below can help you find a provider.

How to find respite care

  • My Aged Care — learn about respite types, eligibility and costs, and use the service finder to locate providers. Call 1800 200 422.
  • Carer Gateway — help for planned and emergency respite. Call 1800 422 737 for urgent support, 24/7.

When to consider respite

  • Your carer needs a regular break to rest and recharge.
  • You are recovering after a hospital stay or illness.
  • Your carer has work, travel, or other commitments.
  • There is an urgent change at home and you need short term support.

If you want long term support

If you are looking for ongoing support, LDK may be right for you. You live in your own apartment with care delivered to your door. Support can increase over time so you do not need to move. This aligns with Our One Move Promise®.
